TRC-20 vs ERC-20: which USDT network to send on
The single most expensive mistake in crypto payments is sending the right coin over the wrong network. It takes ten seconds to check and it is unrecoverable if you do not.
SHORT ANSWER
For paying a merchant, send USDT on TRC-20 (TRON) unless they specify otherwise: fees are about a dollar and transfers confirm in under a minute. ERC-20 (Ethereum) does the same job for $2–$20. They are separate networks — USDT sent on one cannot arrive at an address on the other, and the funds are almost never recoverable.
Why one coin has several networks
USDT is a token issued on top of other blockchains rather than having a chain of its own. Tether has issued it on TRON, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana and more. Each version is a genuine dollar-backed USDT, but each lives on a separate network with its own addresses, its own fees, and no bridge between them at the moment you press send.
Your wallet often shows a single 'USDT' balance, which hides this. The network choice usually appears only at the moment of withdrawal — as a dropdown that is easy to miss.

What actually happens if you get it wrong
The transaction succeeds — that is what makes it dangerous. Your wallet reports it as sent, the funds leave, and nothing arrives at the destination. The tokens now sit at an address on a network where the recipient may hold no key at all.
Recovery is possible only in one narrow case: sending between two networks that both use 0x addresses (Ethereum and BNB Chain, for instance) where the recipient controls the same address on both and is willing to help. Anything involving TRON and an 0x chain is final, because the address formats are incompatible and no one holds the corresponding key.
Sending from an exchange
- The network dropdown is a separate control from the coin selector. Changing the coin often resets the network to a default that is not the one you want.
- Exchange withdrawal fees are not network fees. Some charge a flat $1 for TRC-20 and $10+ for ERC-20; others charge the same for both, which makes TRC-20 the obvious choice.
- Check whether the fee is deducted from your amount or added to it. If deducted, the merchant receives less than the exact figure they quoted, and the order will not settle automatically.

Is TRC-20 USDT the same as ERC-20 USDT?
